Professor Bernhard Koelmel has co-authored a paper titled "Are German Automotive Suppliers in the Commodity Trap? Risks and Potentials of the Taiwanese Platform MIH EV Open," published in Commodities (Issue 4, October 2024). This study examines the risks posed by the MIH EV Open platform, established by Foxconn, to German automotive suppliers, particularly the risk of falling into a commodity trap. The paper delves into the challenges of commoditization as companies face pressure to differentiate in a highly competitive, standardized market. It provides strategic insights for German automotive suppliers, emphasizing innovation, portfolio diversification, and sustainability as key approaches to mitigate these risks. The findings offer critical recommendations for maintaining competitiveness in an industry undergoing significant transformation due to platform economies and electric vehicle innovations.
